Closing the Gap in Cancer Treatment: PatientsForce Committed to Improving Accessibility of New Drugs

February 4th marks World Cancer Day, with organizations worldwide focusing on the inequality issues present in cancer treatment, collectively calling for "Closing the Gap in Treatment." Domestic patient support service groups in Taiwan stated that the country's National Health Insurance system already provides diverse and equal medical choices. However, if a system to strengthen innovative medical payment in the market could be introduced, through collaboration with the government, medical institutions, NGOs, and public-private sectors, it could bridge the gap in the early stages of new treatment availability, particularly for patients with strong demand but insufficient scale. Coupled with patient navigation services, this would help patients better understand various new treatment options, thereby increasing the chances of better treatment outcomes.

This year, the United States Congress specially passed a resolution designating February 4th as World Cancer Day to emphasize taking meaningful action to raise awareness of the inequality in cancer treatment and to support the importance of efforts to close the treatment gap.

In addition to this resolution, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), and the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) jointly announced three major policy focus areas: (1) promoting diversity in clinical trials; (2) improving cancer screening and early detection; and (3) increasing the accessibility of patient navigation.
